Global Centre Community Events

Group pic 1 cropDDE runs a programme of community events at the Global Centre in Exeter and occasionally in other parts of Devon. These events are listed here for your information, most are free and registration is not required unless you choose to show your interest.

Regular events include:

Gown Meets Town – an opportunity for Exeter townspeople and students to get together to listen and contribute to presentations and debates from PhD students.

World at Lunch – every Thursday 1-2pm. Bring your lunch and share a discussion of what’s happening in the world with a friendly multi-cultural group. Look out for occasional World at Lunch specials.

Global Book Club – join a group of individuals interested in learning more about the world around them through the reading of factual books and novels. Read the book and then join our lively discussion group (crib notes available for those who don’t have time to read the full book!). The Global Book Club runs in both Exeter and Plymouth.

Love of Country. A Hebridean Journey by Madeleine Bunting

The Hebrides hold a remarkable place in the imaginations of Scotland and England. Bunting considers the extent of the islands' influence beyond their shores, finding that their history of dispossession and migration has been central to the British imperial past. Perhaps more significant still is how their landscapes have been repeatedly used to imagine the British nation. Love of Country shows how their history is a backdrop for contemporary debates about the relationship between our nations, how Britain was created, and what Britain has meant - for good and for ill.
