plymun09_saudisThe Plymouth Model UN Assembly 2010 enacted a UN Security Council debate on Israel-Palestine conflict. This was the first time that MUNSW staged a UN Security Council debate. The event took place at the Civic Centre in Plymouth during December and involved sixth formers from schools and colleges around Plymouth.

In terms of team participation, this was one of the best MUN Assemblies yet; all participants really threw themselves into the roles of diplomats from Security Council member states. The debate was livened up considerably thanks to strong performances by the Israeli and Palestinian 'observer delegations' who had researched very thoroughly the history of the conflict and the position that their countries were taking. Each country represented gave well researched presentations followed by lively question and answer sessions. Having heard each other's country position, teams lobbied one another and formed alliances before a debate on the resolution itself took place. The final resolution (PDF 78MB) was forwarded to the British Ambassador to the UN, HE Sir Mark Lyall Grant. He forwarded it to his colleagues and here is the response from Reza Afshar, the First Secretary (Political) to the UK Mission to the United Nations:

"I... congratulate the students on debating these very difficult issues and agreeing a text, ... parts of which are not far off some of the language that has appeared in Security Council texts in the past. I'll certainly keep the resolutions on file!... The involvement of young people in the Model United Nations is be much encouraged, it is a great way to get young people interested and engaged in international relations."
