black farmerA Cultural Champion is a Devon resident from another culture or religion who comes into the classroom, workplace or community to give pupils an authentic personal view of their culture...

We live in an area of limited ethnic diversity. According to the 2001 census, only 1.25% of the population of the former County of Devon were non-white (Devon, Plymouth and Torbay). This amounts to just 6,611 people. Since then, the situation has improved somewhat to about 1.9%.

So Devon people are losing out on our entitlement to diversity. We're missing an insight into other cultures, religions and histories that children and adults in London, Birmingham, even Bristol, take for granted. Voices from other cultures are simply not heard - in our schools, our workplaces and our communities. Until now that is.......

Children’s Story Books - Appeal for Uganda: During lockdown DDE has been supporting a project in Uganda training teachers to teach reading using phonics. We are now appealing for assistance to provide story books for the children so that they can begin to enjoy reading. There are two ways you could help either with a donation to buy books from a supplier in Uganda or by donating suitable books which will be shipped to Uganda.

You only have until Sunday afternoon to watch Queen of Katwe the true story of a young girl living in a very impoverished situation in an informal settlement in Kampala. But she has a genius for chess! A really hopeful film. https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m000b1zs/queen-of-katwe
