standup water girl

This is a fundraising initiative led by Devon County Council. Devon has been investing in new school buildings across the county, with excellent results. Council staff were therefore horrified to hear that many pupils, especially older girls, are failing to complete their primary education because of lack of suitable toilets and washing facilities.

Lack of water on school sites is also an issue for the rural primary schools involved in the Food For Thought school linking programme. So Devon Council staff initiated the ‘Stand Up!’ fundraising day in 2009, repeated in 2010 and 2011 and now happening again in February 2012. See the 2010 update on how the money was spent: latest news on Stand Up.

Here are resources to use in 2012:

A colourful set of posters:

Also, from 2011:

There are also two powerpoint presentations: 2011 Stand Up presentation (PPT 5.6MB) and 2010 Stand Up presentation (PPT 4.3MB)

Devon Development Education has also produced a number of resources to help students understanding the issues around toilets and clean water in Uganda

There is a Stand Up Booklet 2009 (PDF 3.3MB) that focuses on the issues that rural schools in  Ugandaare facing and takes its information from those schools that are involved in the Food for Thought programme.

There is also a Stand Up Board Game 2009 (PDF 370KB) that aims to help students appreciate the importance of having access to clean water and sanitation facilities and the impact on life when it is lacking.

Children’s Story Books - Appeal for Uganda: During lockdown DDE has been supporting a project in Uganda training teachers to teach reading using phonics. We are now appealing for assistance to provide story books for the children so that they can begin to enjoy reading. There are two ways you could help either with a donation to buy books from a supplier in Uganda or by donating suitable books which will be shipped to Uganda.

You only have until Sunday afternoon to watch Queen of Katwe the true story of a young girl living in a very impoverished situation in an informal settlement in Kampala. But she has a genius for chess! A really hopeful film. https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m000b1zs/queen-of-katwe
