Introducing Phonics Teaching to Food For Thought (FFT) schools in Mubende District, Uganda.

When head teachers visit primary schools in Devon, they are very impressed by the phonics method of teaching reading.

So we want to train four Ugandan teachers to be Phonics Trainers. We want to send them to be trained by Read for Life Uganda, an ngo whose sole purpose is to train teachers to use phonics. Read for Life has adapted resources for the Ugandan context, where a class may have 100 or more pupils.

After training, these Phonics Trainers will work with the 46 FFT schools in Mubende and Kassanda, training Early Years teachers of years 1, 2 and 3 to use phonics. This will have a long-term impact on the pupils for many years.

Total cost of this programme is £4600. This includes fees, Phonics Training Manuals and other resources, transport and accommodation in Gulu for 4 weeks, for 4 people, while training with Read for Life. £2600. Training of 3 early years teachers from 46 schools, running 3 workshops for each teacher during the year, repeated for two more years initially. £2000.
